The Fiat G-91T
Fiat developed serveral versions of the G-91. Most used was the single seat version, the G-91R, but they also made a supersonic advanced trainer version, the Fiat G-91T. The first prototype of the G-91T flew on May 31, 1960. Two prototypes (MM6288 and MM6289) were built. The Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana, or AMI) ordered 86 a/c of the T.1 version for use with Scuola Volo Basico Avanzato at Amenbdola air base. The MM6315 up to MM6374 and MM6425 up to MM6439 got SA-code on the nose (SA-15 up to SA-89). Later another 15 T.1’s were delivered (MM54392 up to MM54417, SA-92 up to SA-117), making a total of 101 a/c. The Scuola Volo Basico Avanzato integrated in 60 Stormo in the mid eighties and some years later it changed to 32 Stormo. That is why the SA-codes, used for many years changed to 60- codes and later to 32- codes. On 30 September 1995 the last G-91T made a flight in Italian service.
The West German Air Force initially ordered 44 aircraft of the T.3 version, to be built with Fiat in Italy. Most of them went to Waffenschule 50 at Erding, some went to the G-91R units, In 1964 WS50 moved to Fürstenfeldbrück. They had BD+codes. Some years later another 22 aircraft were ordered, now to be built by Dornier in Germany. The last one of this batch was delivered on October 19, 1972. In September 1978 changed WS50 its name into Jagdbombergeschwader 49 (JBG49) and got this unit, besides its training task, a ground attack task. By the end of 1979 the Fiats were phased out and followed up by the Alpha Jet. The last G-91T flight in German service was in 1982.
A total of 28 G-91T’s were delivered tot he Portugese Air Force. Not all of these entered service, with many being broken up for spare parts. Only 11 aircraft, serialled 1801 up to 1811, saw an active life. Portugal finally phased out the last of its G.91s in 1993.
